lighthouse in a hurricane

As we head into hurricane season, it’s important for anyone out on bond with us to plan ahead.

Beacon Bail Bonding is based in Bolivia, NC (near Wilmington) and spans all the way out to the “West of Asheville” counties. We’ve weathered some storms. In fact, we took a lot of heat from other bondsmen during Hurricane Florence because we were doing facebook lives and letting our clients know to evacuate and not worry about making payments. And you know what? EVERY client that evacuated returned and handled their court case. EVERY client who deferred payments ended up paying us – even one guy who had a tree go right through his house.

Prepare yourself and your home. Have non-perishable food, water (even if you’re on city supply), toiletries, pet food, medications, etc.

If the storm’s going to be severe, here’s our official hurricane policy: Your first obligation is ALWAYS your safety and your family’s safety. If you need to evacuate, do it. Just let us know where you are, as soon as you’re in a place of safety. If you have to move into temporary housing, give us that address.

Now, it may not always be so simple … if you’re on probation, the Sex Offender registry, house arrest or curfew, or you have a DVPO, you need to reach out to the law enforcement agency that handles that. If in doubt, call the non-emergency number for your county sheriff’s office and ask them who to talk to. Document your call by recording it if possible, or get the date/time, person you spoke to, and what they told you to do (then do exactly that).

If you run into issues with making your payments on time because the storm has affected your income, contact us. We’ll work it out.

If you need after disaster resources (housing, repairs, food, etc) please call us immediately. Miss Kay has partnerships with disaster relief agencies and can help you figure out where to get help.

Weather events can delay court sessions, but they do not automatically cancel court obligations. Closings are decided by the court, not by rumors or social media posts. You can find a list of court closings here: https://www.nccourts.gov/closings – make sure you’re on the NC Courts official site. If your county is red, click on it to see if your court is closed or delayed, and what instructions are there for your missed date.

Missed court dates create serious problems, even during storms. If you’re in a storm-affected county but your court case is being heard at a county not affected, you’re in a unique situation. Call us immediately and we’ll help you navigate.

At Beacon Bail Bonding, we help clients stay informed when weather impacts court operations. Preparation and communication matter, especially during hurricane season.

If you’re unsure about your court date during a storm, ask before you assume.

Stay safe.
